Ever since I’ve started the story series I’ve been ‘hunting’ down a BMW E39 M5. Not only is it one of the best M cars ever made but it’s also my favourite ever BMW. It features a 5 litre naturally aspirated V8, a manual transmission and it’s driven only by its rear wheels.
Every time I get the chance to ride in one, I immediately jump at the opportunity. Even though every time I experience the E39 M5 from the passenger seat, I’m always in awe of it when it’s all done.
Sometimes less is more
Up until now I only filmed highly tuned BMWs. But after spending the day with this E39 M5, this is one of those rare instances when less is more. The car is lowered and thanks to it’s Eisenmann race exhaust it even more louder than before. The engine’s power has also been increased and the car is now powered by some 450HP.
The wheels are 18″ SSR Koenig 3 piece, the front bumper is made by AC Schnitzer with a custom lip. Then we have a rear carbon diffuser, a Schmiedmann short shifter with an M Performance shift knob and that’s about it really.
So yes, the mods list isn’t very long. But I think that’s a good thing because what small and incremental changes do they enhance the driving ability of the car without sacrificing (too much of) the character of the E39 M5. It’s still a proper M-car to drive around twisted roads and that’s exactly what Michael likes to use it as. He loves his stanced cars, but he drives them like he stole them. Which is why these cars were built to begin with, right?
…as I type this, I’m trying to figure out how can I squeeze one of these in my garage
The E39 M5 is just like a bottle of fine wine. It gets better and better with age. The exterior design has aged very well and after all these years it still feels very well put together.
I’ve loved my time with the E39 M5. And now, as I type this, I’m trying to figure out how can I squeeze one of these in my garage.
Michael plans to fit an air lift system on the car during the ‘winter break’, he wants to rebuild the exhaust and to widen the wheels a little bit.
